Bhutan – Druk, The land of the Thunder Dragon

Bhutan is a small landlocked country located in the eastern Himalayas. In Dzongkha, the official language of Bhutan, the country is called Druk and its people the Drukpas. It has a population of about 600,000, out of which nearly 70% are farmers.

Known for its un-touched ancient culture and tradition, Bhutan still has its past in its present.

Bhutan, over the past recent years, has been undergoing some political transition from the Hereditary Monarchy to a Democratic Constitutional Monarchy. All the initiatives have been entirely from the monarchy himself, the fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuk. A draft constitution has already been prepared and come 2008, Bhutan will enter into a new era of political system that has been carefully devised to suit the needs of Bhutan.

Nearly 72% of the land is under forest cover and is one of the last areas still having an immaculate environment where nature and people live in harmony. Owing to its high degree of biodiversity, Bhutan has been identified as one of the ten global hotspots and a leader in the area of environmental conservation.

Bhutan has chosen a more cautious policy on tourism mainly to safeguard its rich natural and cultural heritage.  It has been nearly a couple of decades now that Bhutan had opened its door to tourism and the Bhutanese government is still committed to manage its tourism industry carefully in line with its ‘high value, low volume’ principle. This policy has also helped tourists enjoy a unique and rich travel experience in Bhutan.

Bhutan has series of colorful festivals, popularly known as Tshechus, where mask dances are a popular site. These festivals not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan but also preach Buddhism and the Buddhist view of life in a simple way. All of the above, makes Bhutan an exotic travel destination and definitely deserves a visit.
