Bhutanese Cuisine
Bhutanese cuisine includes a variety of dishes, mainly red rice, pork, beef, chicken, fish and yak meat (which is everyone’s favorite), cheese and lots of chilies. Although we are Buddhist country, yet people of Bhutan eat lots of meat. The most traditional dishes are fiery. The ema datshi, a dish of chilies with cheese, could certainly be considered the national dish. It is very hot and spicy. Other traditional dish are puta, buckwheat noodles, hontay, buckwheat dumplings filled with cheese and spinach or turnip, momo, flour dumplings filled with meat or cheese and cabbage, suja, slated butter tea; and dheysee, saffron sweet rice.
We take always three meals a day. Every meal is served with rice and some curry. These days however, Bhutanese are tilting towards the Western type of food. But in festivals, weddings and other traditional gatherings they always go for the cuisine of the land.
The visitors to Bhutanese always served food more suitable to western taste ranging from continental to Chinese. Even on trek, our trained cooks prepare dishes suitable to western taste. If our visitors wanted to try and taste the real Bhutanese dish, you can always ask to us.
